Are you worried about being too pushy with your contacts? Staying connected with your sphere is essential for building relationships and growing your business, but nobody wants to feel sold to every time you reach out. That’s why it’s important to reach out in a way that feels genuine and engaging. When done right, it feels natural, strategic, and completely relationship-driven.

Thoughtful, consistent follow-up helps you stay top of mind so you’re the first person people think of when they need help. Here are some tips to avoid sounding salesy and keep your contacts engaged and interested.

1. Prioritize value over frequency. One of the biggest mistakes we see is thinking that reaching out more often equals better results. It doesn’t. What really matters is the value you provide when you do reach out.

Instead of sending generic updates or weekly promotional emails, focus on content your contacts will actually care about. This could be helpful market insights, hyper-local updates, or quick tips they can use immediately. When your messages clearly put your contacts first, they naturally stay more engaged.

For example, if interest rates start to drop, it’s the perfect opportunity to send a quick note explaining what that could mean for them as buyers or sellers. Sharing the information is one thing, but giving context and actionable advice makes it meaningful.

“Staying top of mind is about the value you bring, not how often you reach out.”

2. Mix up your communication channels. Not everyone likes to be contacted the same way, so it helps to mix things up. Some people prefer email, others respond better to text, and some engage more on social media. Varying how you communicate makes it more likely your message gets noticed.

We like to send quick notes on Instagram, share helpful posts on Facebook, or mail handwritten cards for birthdays and anniversaries. A short video message is another great way to make the interaction more memorable.

Using a CRM also helps us track communication preferences and see what works best. If someone consistently responds to or opens a certain type of message, that’s usually the method we continue with.

3. Be consistent, not overbearing. Consistency counts, but it doesn’t mean reaching out every day. The goal is to find a rhythm that you can maintain monthly, every couple of weeks, or every quarter. Even a simple monthly market update or a light check-in like, “Hey, just checking in. If you need anything real estate related, I’m here to help” can go a long way.

Make sure your messages are easy to reference when your contacts need them, but not so far back that they can’t find what they remembered. Regular check-ins like this keep your relationships warm and natural, without making you seem pushy.

When you combine value, variety, and consistency, staying in touch with your sphere doesn’t have to feel uncomfortable. You can stay top of mind without overdoing it, and your contacts will appreciate the authentic approach.
